ANDROGYNY! is a research project led by Charlie Ashwell and Es Morgan, inviting artists of all disciplines to think about gender through dancing.
After an initial pilot workshop at Chisenhale Dance Space in 2018, ANDROGYNY! has been selected as one of Live Art Development Agency's DIY16: 2019 projects. In October 2019, Charlie and Es will be joined by 15 artists at Dance4, Nottingham, for 2 days of experimentation and research.
We propose androgyny as a tool to approach gender through movement, action and sensation. We want to challenge what masculine and feminine dancing looks like!
Androgyny, for us, is not something that you are, but something that you do: a flickering, an oscillation, a movement or disturbance. Through developing “androgynous” practices, we refuse a passive, neutral middle ground, and move further towards the unknown.
